Very curious logo, never seen it before....

Maybe JM you could try to ask your friend Dr Pete Millar? It would be very interesting??

Anyway a good choice GVM and in a very good condition, I love this watch. Congratulations.

Guys,

I guess most of you know me from the Doxa book I wrote. Although I've known JM for years I really only stumbled on this forum by accident.

Yes, I know a lot about Doxa SUB history :-) but I don't know everything and the Doxa history keeps throwing up new stuff.

I think the watch and dial above is one of those pieces of history.

First lets analyse the watch.

Caseback is from the first generation SUB 300T. You can tell that because the ship logo looks like it is a medal inserted into the caseback. Later casebacks don't have the defined ring around the ship. Also the 6667 in the first part of the serial number puts it around 1968 manufacture by my reckoning.

The bezel is metric which means it is an European issue. The US watches from that date had a bezel with FT markers and a US Divers logo.

OK the dial....... I posted the first photos on a few forums and a number of responses said they thought it could be a redial. The reasons were that the paint looked different and that the minute and hour hands had been relumed (look how bright they are compared to the heavily oxidised second hand and that the date looked to be offset in the window. If these observations are correct then it would at least indicate that the watch had been opened, serviced and maybe a new date wheel put in when the hands were relumed.

Up until I saw a beautiful redial from Germany I would have said that the fact that the dial has SWISS T and <25 MC at the bottom would guarantee it is an original dial. However, nowadays, the small lettering can be put on the dial and the redialing experts are just too good now. BUT..... having said that, the latter images of the dial show that the logo paint looks to have been done at the same time as the rest of the dial. The problem here is that I have looked very closely at my Conquistador dial and a redial I had done and the painting looks the same as well. If it is in fact an original dial and I would believe it is until hard proof tells me otherwise, then we have a real vintage mystery. What is the logo?

We know that Doxa made short run watches for a number of companies. The watch definitely is and maybe the logo company is 40 years old. Maybe it was a German / Italian / French company that had a few watches made up and went out of business over the last 40 years. It really is hard to tell unless someone recognises the logo.

One other thing about the dial which is obvious is that it doesn't have the little luminmous spot at the left side of the date window. These are not that common but a number of vintage SUBs of the period did have the luminous dot. The problem with it was that over time it oxidised and could fall onto the date window and then into the movement and also scrape the date wheel.

Again, pure speculation here but that may have happened, necessitating a new date wheel and removal of any traces from the side of the date window.

The other thing about the dial is that the luminous markers seem to be in very good condition for a 40 year old watch. The second hand has a typical 40 year old degradation of Tritium material. I would have expected the hour markers to be similar, maybe a bit better but the only way to tell would be to take a photo in darkness and see what the strength of the luminous material was. If the hour markers glow very bright then the dial has been relumed, which of course then opens up the case for the logio having been put on later or it is a very, very good redial.

Until we can find out what the logo is, this watch will remain a bit of a mystery. A pretty good looking mystery in my opinion.

Pete

thank you dr.millar for the informations.my watch is completely original, the dial is not a redone dial, the tritium is original,old... my watch is not a frankestein.or''put together''.

the tritium light is very poor, the essence of the marterial, analyzed with a lens, show tha it is very old,not luminoa or similar.

the dial is not a redone.is completely original.

it is a mistery the logo, not the genuine nature of the watch,in my honest opinion.

best regards,gvm

obviously,if you see the dial with a direct sunlight the colour of the hour and minute hands seems more white than the index..but with the ''right light''the colour is very similar everywhere.

the dial shows few scratches, like enamel scratches, but it's normal.the dial is 40 years old.

the logo is original and ultra rare.all the watch is original.unmolested.

very good explanations and with the macropics it's easy to make an opinion. I'm not expert to say if it's original or not, I believe GVM when he said it's not a redial.

Fantastic watch!
