Did you know it? [Diving, people section]

Message par Jean-Marc le Ven 11 Juin - 13:31

HRH, the Prince of Wales, has been President of BSAC since 1974, when he succeeded his father, Prince Philip, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

An experienced diver, The Prince of Wales first learnt to dive as a young cadet at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. He has dived in many diverse places, including the West Indies and under the ice in Resolute Bay, Canada. In the early 1980s, Prince Charles also dived on the wreck of King Henry VIII's flagship, The Mary Rose.

A committed supporter of the environment and marine conservation, BSAC is proud to have HRH, The Prince of Wales at the Presidential helm. Both Prince William and Prince Harry are also trained divers, continuing the Royal association with the sport.

The Prince is a trained scuba diver

In July 1975, The Prince spent 47 minutes under water examining the wreck of the Mary Rose, a Tudor warship sunk off Portsmouth in 1545: he was the first member of the Royal Family to see it since Henry VIII watched the ship sink.

It was the first of a number of dives The Prince made to the wreck, and he became President of the Mary Rose Trust which raised the remains of the ship in 1982 for preservation in a new museum at Portsmouth.

The Prince of Wales has also dived under a solid sheet of ice in Canada.
